Ruby is considered to be one of the rare gemstones because of all the rubies mined only 1% is considered to be of "Gem" quality and even from that, the finest is Pigeon-Blood color which is intensely red with no overtones of purple. Unlike the other precious gemstones larger sizes of rubies are extremely rare and are more expensive than comparable diamonds.
